Abstract: Forecasts expect significant structural eilanges of the demesti.c oil market in the Federal Republic of Germany up to the end of this century. This raises the issue of an adequate adaptation of the German refining industry which is discussed in this report. For a concise analysis of the expected adaptation processes, an aggregatedmodel of domestic crude oil refining is developed. lt contains a detailed description of the relevant refinery processes and incorporates the price determining effects of the international oil markets. The model is applied to quantify adaptation strategies for the German refining industry, taking into account the quantitative aspects of Future oil demand patterns as well as the qualitative implications of stronger environmental controls an crude oil proeessing and oil product specifications.
